What do I need to know about HDS?
HDS stands for HTTP Dynamic Streaming. It's the segmented streaming option for Flash Video. Flash itself is no longer supported in any modern browser so you will most likely no longer encounter this protocol.
When would you use HDS?
When you really need to
HDS was the method to do segmented streaming using Flash there is almost no chance you will still encounter this as HDS was somewhat unpopular even during the peaks of Flash streaming.
Advantages of HDS
- It's Flash video with trick play (such as seeking)
- It will only work in ancient browsers
Disadvantages of HDS
- It uses Flash, which is no longer supported in modern browsers
- It cannot contain more modern codecs than H264
