What do I need to know about MP3?

MP3 is also known as MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III. It is not named MP3 after MPEG-3, which is a spec that has nothing to do with audo. The 3 comes from it being the third defined audio format for the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 specification.

It's a relatively wellknown media container even though better alternatives are available. Its strength is in its compatibility with audio devices, almost everything that plays audio will accept MP3.

When would you use MP3?

Audio streaming

MP3 only supports audio tracks, so it's a good choice when you need to deliver audio only to your users. While most players do support MP3 it is not the audio codec of choice when combined with a video track. It's successor AAC recommended here instead.

Things to know about MP3

  • MP3 is a lossy protocol, which means that audio quality isn't 100% maintained during its conversion to MP3 audio

Advantages of MP3

  • The most wellknown audio format
  • Anything will support MP3 audio

Disadvantages of MP3

  • Lossy protocol
  • Does not always match well with video
