Windows specific instructions

Installing MistServer can be done by downloading the installer from our downloads page and following the instructions. Once installed you can start and stop MistServer through the MistTray application available in your taskbar.

3.4 and up

Current 3.4 installs of MistServer under Windows no longer have the MistTray application. The way to boot MistServer under Windows has slightly changed, instead of a MistTray application you will have a MistServer shell application to boot through your Windows boot menu. Booting that will show direct console output & have MistServer ready to use.

To close this shell please use ctrl+c or the cross mark in the top right corner. However note that pressing the cross mark could make you lose your last changes were less than a minute ago.

Firewalls & Windows Defender

By Nature Server software like MistServer is blocked by most Firewall and Defender processes. It is because of this that we recommend running Mistserver in a Linux environment. However should you want to run MistServer on Windows that is possible, you just need to make additional configurations.

Firewall

Windows will most likely have the ports necessary for MistServer blocked off. These ports can be configured, using MistServers defaults would be:

  • TCP: 1936 (RTMP), 8080 (HTTP), 5554 (RTSP)
  • UDP: 8889 (SRT)

Protocols like WebRTC and RTSP (over UDP) will open a random UDP port. These will most likely not work at all unless you open all UDP ports, please keep this in mind.

Defender

As MistServer spawns a process per connection there's a good chance that depending on your Windows version the Defender will find this questionable behaviour. Please add the MistServer folder or processes to the exceptions list in order to avoid getting prompted for each connection.
